Last year, I learned that I had a weak piriformis after I suffered a femornal neck bone injury. The piriformis protects the femoral neck from bending. Strong hip external rotators are incredibly important to injury-free running. I use a simple tool to measure external rotator strength to determine whether or not you would benefit from additional strength training.
